I wrote about the safety of essential oils here, stating that dilution of essential oils is important. For this purpose, we can use carrier oils!

What are carrier oils?

Carrier oils are oils which are naturally derived from plant sources, similarly to essential oils. They usually have a neutral smell and do not contain the therapeutic constituents of other essential oils.They aren’t volatile like essential oils, therefore making them an excellent medium for dilution.They are perfect to dilute especially strong essential oils. They help reduce the concentration of the essential oil without altering its therapeutic qualities. In addition, we are also able to spread the oil onto a larger surface are with dilution. However, it is important to note that carrier oils have limited shelf life & can go bad, therefore, don’t go making bulk dilutions in hug bottles! In other words, only dilute a maximum of 3 months usage.

Here are some example of carrier oils:

  • V-6 Vegetable Complex* (A proprietary Young Living formula combining fractionated coconut oil, grapeseed oil, sweet almond oil, wheat germ oil (contains a lot of vitamin E and acts as a natural preservative), sunflower oil, and olive oil

  • Grapeseed Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil*
  • Jojoba Oil
  • Olive Oil
  • Fractionated Coconut Oil
  • Coconut Oil
  • Cocoa Butter
  • Shea Butter

Remember to choose the right carrier oil for your skin for optimum usage of essential oils!

*Caution: May cause a reaction to those with nut allergies.
