Confinement with Shaklee

Day 33 of confinement.
This means Khaleel is already 1 month old, Alhamdulillah, and I have 11 days to go before I taste freedom. Haha.

I have been blessed with the opportunity to go through my confinement period with Shaklee supplements. Here are what I have observed:

  1. My perineum stitches healed faster. I remember very clearly about still having trouble sitting down properly and complaining about being sore down there 3 weeks after I gave birth to Khayla, but this time, it took about a little over a week for me to be able to sit and move normally. Alhamdulillah.
  2. I feel energized and fresh every single day despite the fact that I am waking up several times to nurse Khaleel during the night. In fact, I actually felt like getting back on my Zumba regimen last week but let’s not overdo it lah. Hehe.
  3. Alhamdulillah, so far I have no issues with breast milk supply although I do not get to express my milk as often as I should. Khaleel sometimes have to let go of my breasts, while panting and gagging a little because too much milk is going into his mouth. Hehe.
  4. I have lost 11 kgs so far. After I delivered Khayla, it took me about 2 months to lose the same amount of weight ! Just in case y’all did not know, I gained 18 kgs throughout this pregnancy. Haha. So I have about 7 kgs more to lose to achieve my pre-pregnancy weight. Wish me luck ! Hehe.

These are the supplements I take everyday:

ESP, VitaLea, Vita C, B Complex, Zinc Complex, Alfalfa Complex, Ostematrix, Omega Guard & Lecithin

ESP, VitaLea, Vita C, B Complex, Zinc Complex, Alfalfa Complex, Ostematrix, Omega Guard & Lecithin

And here is how I take them daily:

I take 1 tablet of Zinc Complex as soon as I wake up in the morning.
After lunch, I will take 2 tablets of VitaLea, 1 tablet of B Complex, 1 tablet of Sustained Release Vita C & 3 capsules of Lecithin.
I take another tablet of Sustained Release Vita C and another 3 capsules of Lecithin after dinner.
And before I go to bed, I take 4 tablets of Ostematrix along with 3 capsules of Omega Guard.

I drink ESP & Meal Shakes when I am hungry in between meals which is usually in the evening of before I go to bed.

I occasionally take Alfalfa Complex too, but I noticed it made my breasts engorge with milk too much (which is a good thing !) so I take it as and when I feel like it. Hee.

I believe that the Zinc Complex and Vita C helped speed up my healing process and the others contribute to my energy, weight loss (thank you Lecithin & Omega Guard !) and milk supply !
Lecithin has also helped me when I had (painful) blocked milk ducts.
Alhamdulillah.

All this while I have been reading and receiving positive feedbacks from others about going through confinement with Shaklee supplements, so I am extremely grateful and ecstatic I got to experience the awesome-ness firsthand. Yay ! :)

So happy I got to share this with all of you. And yes, I would definitely recommend Shaklee supplements for anyone who are pregnant or going through the confinement phase. Heck, I would recommend them to everyone ! Hehe.

Ok bye !

Prenatal and Postnatal Vitamins

Selamat Hari Raya y’all !!
Maaf Zahir & Batin !

Better late than never, kan kan kan kan ? Hee.

Alhamdulillah.
I am now in my 2nd trimester, 25 weeks to be exact.
And I am now 10kgs heavier. Haha.

The nausea and lethargy I went through during my first trimester has slowly started to dissipate. Alhamdulillah.
And syukur to Allah, I managed to fast throughout Ramadhan this year with only missing one day because I woke up after Subuh. Sobs.
I was hoping to get to puasa penuh but I guess having to qadha 1 day isn’t that bad. :)

Mr. Sunshine has been such a darling, helping me to cook and clean for the past 5 months. Love you Encik Gigi Besarku !
I think he has this hidden passion for cooking, he keeps googling for new recipes to try. Hehe.

Just to share, this is the Healthy Prenatal set from Shaklee that I have been taking:

prenatal and postnatal vitamins

ESP
Protein supply for sustained energy, the building of fetal tissue and for a healthy uterus for baby to grow in !

VitaLea Iron Formula
This is a multivitamin with iron which helps us fill in our daily nutritional gaps. The iron in it helps pregnant mothers maintain healthy hemoglobin (HB) levels.

B-Complex
Complete source of B vitamins, including Folic Acid for mother and baby.
It’s critical to have enough folic acid in our system by the early weeks of pregnancy to prevent spina bifida. That’s why I recommend taking B Complex wayyyy before you get pregnant. :)

Sustained Release Vita C
Vitamin C helps improve our immune system, which is of course very important during pregnancy.

Ostematrix
Source of calcium, magnesium and vitamin D, which is very important for bone and growth of baby. The calcium our baby needs is provided by our diet, so we have to make sure we get enough calcium in our diet.
Ostematrix also helps in easing constipation !

Omega Guard
To provide a safe and beneficial amount of DHA & EPA for fetal brain development.

So there you are, my basic prenatal vitamins !
What’s good about all the above is I can still continue taking them after delivery (with the addition of Alfalfa Complex), and I plan to do so, InshaAllah.

I believe these supplements have helped me stay energized throughout Ramadhan, with Allah’s permission, of course.

Just found out you’re pregnant ? Congratulations ! Let me help you decide on which prenatal vitamins you should take. :)

The importance of Essential Fatty Acids to Women’s Health

GLA

These days, many of us neglect the importance of quality oils and fats in maintaining our health and the prevention of certain diseases.
Essential fatty acids play an important role in producing hormones, cell membrane function, regulating pain, inflammation and swelling, dilating or constricting blood vessels, mediating our immune response, regulating smooth muscle responses, preventing blood clots, regulating blood pressure and nerve transmission, regulating cholesterol levels, and much, much more. Deficiencies of essential fatty acids can lead to many health problems for men and women and some that are particular to women.
The Fatty Acid Science
Essential fatty acids (EFA’s) must be obtained from the diet or supplementation because our bodies cannot make them. Although all fatty acids are the major building blocks of all fats, the most important ones are linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). LA is an essential omega-6 fatty acid and ALA is an essential omega-3 fatty acid. We need both omega-6 and omega-3 oils but the balance of omega-6 to omega-3 oils is critical to the proper metabolism of prostaglandins which are important for the regulation of inflammation, pain, blood pressure, fluid balance, blood clotting, steroid production and hormone synthesis, heart, kidney and gut function, and nerve function.
Credits: cholesterolbattle.com
Without adequate amounts of GLA and EPA, prostaglandin 1 and 3 production will be reduced. With an improper balance between omega-6 oils and omega-3 oils, too much prostaglandin series 2 (PGE2) will be produced which is a pro-inflammatory prostaglandin. Both a reduction in the anti-inflammatory prostaglandins and an increase in the pro-inflammatory prostaglandins lead to problems. For women, these problems may include premenstrual syndrome, menstrual cramps, abnormal menstrual bleeding, pregnancy related problems and fetal development, osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease and breast disease.
Premenstrual syndrome
The main strategy of supplementing with essential fatty acids for PMS is an attempt to raise the body’s own formation of PGE1. The most popular method of doing so has been to supplement with evening primrose oil products in order to supply increased levels of gamma linolenic acid. The effects of EPO have been shown to be best for clumsiness and headaches although all symptoms including depression, irritability, bloating and breast tenderness showed a marked improvement. Other sources of oils that contain gamma linolenic acid and raise PGE1 include borage oil, black currant oil and rape seed oil.
Menstrual cramps
The best medicinal foods for menstrual cramps are those foods that increase the antispasmodic prostaglandins, the PGE1 series and the PGE3 series. Certain fish, like salmon, tuna, halibut, and sardines contain linolenic acid, which is a fatty acid that helps to relax muscles by the production of these prostaglandins. There are many seeds and nuts that are sources of linoleic acid and linolenic acid, which also then produce these muscle relaxing prostaglandins. The best seed sources of both these fatty acids are flaxseeds and pumpkin seeds. Sesame seeds and sunflower seeds are excellent sources of linoleic acid.
Sunflower Seeds
In the second half of the menstrual cycle, omega-6 fatty acids, particularly arachidonic acid, are released. Subsequently, an increase in PGE2 occurs, causing uterine contractions leading to a lack of oxygen to the uterine muscles and the subsequent pain. Omega-3 fatty acids, EPA and DHA, compete with omega-6 fatty acids and result in the production of the PGE-1 and 3 series. Based on these observations, the use of essential fatty acid supplementation can be very effective in the prevention and treatment of menstrual cramps.
Supplementation with flax oil (high in omega-3 fatty acids), borage oil (high in LA and GLA), black currant oil (high in LA and GLA), evening primrose oil(high in LA and GLA), and fish oils (high in omega- 3 oils), is one way of favorably altering the synthesis of the beneficial prostaglandins; the end result likely will be less uterine contractions and less menstrual pains.
Borage
After the rise of progesterone in the second half of the menstrual cycle followed by its decline right before menstruation – progesterone withdrawal – omega-6 fatty acids, particularly arachidonic acid, are released. Subsequently, an increase in PGF2 alpha and PGE2 occurs, causing uterine contractions leading to ischemia and pain. Instead of inhibiting ovulation and therefore the progesterone effect, or inhibiting the synthesis of prostaglandins with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents, the omega-3 fatty acids, eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid, compete with omega-6 fatty acids and result in the production of the PGE1 and PGE3 series. Based on these observations, the use of fish oil containing omega-3 fatty acids as a supplement seems logical and attractive.

“Beberapa bulan selepas bersalin, ibu jari dan pergelangan tangan kiri saya mula rasa sakit, nak dukung baby pun susah. Nak angkat apa-apa dengan tangan kiri memang tak boleh. Kadang ibu jari tu macam ter’snap’ dan sakit, and boleh terlepas apa-apa barang yang sedang dipegang. Rasa macam kena De Quervain’s Syndrome. Pernah cuba urut, Alhamdulillah OK but sekejap sahaja dah sakit semula.

Saya start makan 3 capsules OmegaGuard setiap hari dan selepas habis sebotol (sebulan), dah noticed yang tangan ini dah tak sakit dah. Of course selama sebulan tu dah try avoid menggunakan tangan kiri banyak-banyak. But Alhamdulillah dengan Omega Guard, tiada lagi ibu jari ter’snap’ and sakit lagi, nak dukung my baby pun boleh dengan senang hati nya. Alhamdulillah. :)

Omega-3 yang terdapat di dalam Omega Guard mempunyai anti-inflammatory properties (anti-keradangan) yang telah membantu melegakan kesakitan yang saya alami selama ini. Alhamdulillah. Ini kisah benar ye, hehe. :)

Sebab itulah bulan ini saya WAJIB buat stok sendiri banyak-banyak sementara promosi Omega Guard. :)”

The Mega Benefits of Omega-3’s

Thinking of banning fat entirely from your diet ?

Don’t !
Some types of fat can actually prevent disease and improve health ! The key lies in a general understanding of fats, and in knowing which fats to emphasize in your diet.

The Fat Family Tree
The family of fat is very complex, so to make it less confusing, picture it as a family tree. At the top, there are two different families of fat—saturated fat and unsaturated fat. Saturated fat (butter is one example) is packed with hydrogen atoms, making it solid at room temperature. Unsaturated fat (like olive oil) contains fewer hydrogen atoms, so it is liquid at room temperature. The family of unsaturated fat includes two children: monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat. In the polyunsaturated fat family, you’ll find omega-6 fatty acids and omega-3 fatty acids, and it is the omega-3 family that has been making headlines in the nutrition world.

3 Types of Omega-3’s
There are actually three types of fatty acids that are collectively referred to as omega-3’s: ALA (alpha-linolenic acid), EPA (eicosapentaenoic), and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). Besides being hard to pronounce, they are extremely important to your health. Omega-3’s are “essential” fatty acids, because they are necessary for health and must be included in your diet (because the human body cannot manufacture them on its own). But what exactly are they used for, and what do they do for human health?

Mega Health Benefits
Extensive research indicates that omega-3 fats reduce inflammation, helping to prevent inflammatory diseases like heart disease and arthritis. In addition to warding off inflammation, omega-3’s are also essential to the brain, impacting behavior and cognitive function, and are especially necessary during fetal development. According to the University of Maryland Medical Center (UMM), omega-3’s may also:

  • Improve artery health by helping to reduce plaque buildup and blood clots in arteries that lead to the brain.
  • Improve cholesterol by lowering triglycerides and elevating HDL (good cholesterol) levels. These benefits come primarily from DHA and EPA.
  • Improve joint health by reducing joint tenderness and stiffness associated with arthritis and osteoarthritis.
  • Improve bone health by positively impacting the body’s calcium levels, reducing the incidence of bone loss.
  • Improve mental health by helping to insulate nerve cells in the brain, allowing these nerve cells to better communicate with one another. People who are deficient in omega-3’s may suffer from depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, eating disorders, and ADHD.
  • Improve skin health by helping to alleviate symptoms related to skin disorders like acne and psoriasis.
  • Improve bowel health by reducing inflammation of the bowels, helping alleviate symptoms of Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis.
  • Improve lung health by reducing inflammation in diseases like asthma.
  • Improve menstrual health by reducing the pain associated with PMS and menstruation.
  • Help prevent cancer. Colon, breast, and prostate cancers have all been correlated with low intakes of omega-3’s.

Sources of Omega-3’s
The three different types of omega-3’s are found in specific types of foods.

  • ALA is found in foods of plant origin. The richest source of ALA is flaxseed, but it is also found in hempseed, canola oil, soybeans, soybean oil, pumpkin seeds, pumpkin seed oil, linseeds, walnuts, and walnut oil. Once ingested, the body converts ALA into EPA and DHA, allowing it to be more readily used by the body. However, this conversion isn’t very efficient. That’s why experts recommend including EPA and DHA sources in your diet as well.
  • DHA is found in seafood, algae, and coldwater fish such as salmon, sardines and albacore tuna. *Note: Fish oil supplements and vegetarian DHA supplements (containing algae) are also available in liquid and capsule form, but always consult your health care provider before taking any supplements. Only use fish oil supplements that have been certified to be free of heavy metal contaminants like mercury.
  • EPA is found in many of the same foods as DHA, including cold-water fish such as salmon, and sardines, as well as cod liver, herring, mackerel, and halibut. *Note: Fish oil and vegetarian algae supplements are also good sources of EPA, but always consult your health care provider before taking any supplements. Only use fish oil supplements that have been certified to be free of heavy metal contaminants like mercury.
  • Enriched eggs that contain all three types of omega-3 fatty acids are readily available these days. These eggs are enriched by adding flaxseed or algae to the hens’ diets so that they produce eggs that are rich in healthy fats. According to the Flax Council, omega-3-enriched eggs provide almost half of the recommended daily level of ALA and one-quarter of the recommended daily level of EPA and DHA—the same amount that can be found in 3 ounces of fish.
