Toddler Regression During Pregnancy

Before I go on, I just want to state that I am fully aware that Khayla is no longer a toddler. Hehe.

Since early last month (specifically after we went for the 3D scan), Khayla has been crying on and off at school especially when I drop her off in the mornings. She would hold on to me and cry, “Nak Mummy, nak Mummy !”.

Last week, she even ran out from her class to the gate as I was reversing my car to leave the school area. It took me about 15 minutes to console her. *nangis*

Her teacher and bibik have asked me whether anything had happened prior to her crying episodes but I reassured them that all is well at home. According to the bibik, there was one time she kept on sobbing until even when they performed solat Dhuha. *nangis*

Please bear in mind that this is all happening after 7 months of going to her montessori with no problems at all !
So I do not think it’s separation anxiety anymore.

Last Friday, Mr Sunshine decided that starting this week, he will be the one to send Khayla to school because dealing with her being emotional in the mornings affect my emotions too. Sedih Mummy tauuu.

But, yesterday morning I kissed her goodbye while she was still asleep, and to my surprise she immediately woke up and started crying, “Nak Mummy, nak Mummy,” again !
Even when I told her Ayah is around and that he will send her to school, she kept on crying and was clinging to me until our front door. *nangis*

People have been telling me that she is acting this way because I am pregnant and that it’s normal. I tried googling my problem up and came across a few articles which I think answers my queries.

So, apparently Khayla might be going through what they call toddler regression, and in her case it might be toddler regression during pregnancy.

Toddler regression is when your toddler starts acting like a baby, or extra clingy after months of independence.

According to Natasha Burgert (MD, FAAP, pediatrician at Pediatrics Associates in Kansas City, Missouri),

“You’ve done such a great job of creating a natural, healthy attachment with your older child that he’s feeling a bit ‘off’ due to the change in routine related to your pregnancy. Kids notice changes in the attention they’re provided. Toddlers regress in their behavior because they’re seeking normalcy. They’re trying to tell you to make sure that they get the attention they’ve been so used to getting.” (Source)

According to the What To Expect website, a toddler’s regression to babyhood (a time when he felt secure and close to you) may be caused by a number of factors:

  • It might be due to conflicting feelings about growing up (poor kids, so young and have to go through conflict !)
  • He may be feeling frustrated or overwhelmed by a developmental milestone
  • Reaction to a change or a stressful situation in his life, such as the arrival of a new sibling, starting preschool, or tension at home.

I spoke to Khayla’s principal last Friday evening, and even she mentioned that sometimes even though we might not think that our routine has changed but kids can notice even minute changes such as us being more tired than usual.

A couple of useful tips on how to handle toddler regression during pregnancy:

  1. Go ahead and baby your child. Let him cling, suck his thumb, or drink from a bottle (but fill it only with water). Not letting him slide back will only increase his desire to revert to babyhood and may prolong the phase. (Source)
  2. Heap on the love. Show him that he doesn’t have to act like a baby to get your attention. (Source)
  3. Doing your best to keep up your toddler’s routine — while taking care of yourself — is that best way to handle toddler regression. If you’re not up for a game of hide-and-seek. Do something else together. Read a book or play with cars or dolls. Keep in mind that a certain amount of regression during toddlerhood is completely normal, even if you weren’t expecting baby #2. Any mothers out there who have experienced the same situation ?
I would appreciate your tips and advice.
Thank you in advance ! 🙂

A rocky start to 2015

Hello y’all !
Assalamu’alaikum. 🙂

We bid farewell to 2014 and said hi to 2015, and we’re already on the thirteenth day of the New Year ! Alhamdulillah.

2014 has been a trying year for us Malaysians, with the recent massive floods and planes crashing (or going missing).
2014 was a trying year for my family too, with Khayla being admitted twice to DEMC and me struggling to juggle between my new job, family time & time for Shaklee.

Hopefully 2015 will be much better for all of us. Ameen.

However, 2015 kicked off with Daddy being unwell. He was rushed to the Selayang Hospital on Friday, 2nd January by Marc & Marlene because he was weak and fell in the toilet.
The wards were full so he was observed in the emergency department for 18 hours !
He was finally admitted in the medical ward 9D on Saturday afternoon.

They initially said it was pneumonia, so they started him on antibiotics and he had to put on a face mask for oxygen supply as his percentage of oxygen saturation (SpO2) wasn’t too good.

DaddyCandy
Poor Daddy. 🙁

On Sunday, they started treating him as COAD, in view of his chronic smoking history and his symptoms were similar to asthma symptoms.
Daddy stopped smoking (cold turkey !) 15 years ago but prior to that he was smoking for more than 30 years.

Soo he was given bronchodilator nebuliser every 4 hours and started on an metered dose inhaler. Daddy said the nebuliser has helped him sleep better. Alhamdulillah.
He was finally discharged on Wednesday, 7th January.

Marc, Marlene, Mr. Sunshine and I took turns to keep Daddy company in the ward.
Marc and I fell sick along the way – fever, chills, body aches purging and loss of appetite !

So that was our rocky start to 2015, but it hasn’t wavered my spirits to move forward. Because, at the end of the day, everything happens for a reason. Allah knows best ! 🙂

My next post will be on my new year’s resolutions. Hehe.

Okbye.
Take care everyone, stay healthy ! 🙂

of dian khayla turning two & our 2013 eid celebrations

Well, hello there everyone !
Assamu’alaikum !
Selamat Hari Raya ! Still valid lah I guess since today is the last day of Syawal, teehee. 🙂

This is going to be a looooong post so bear with me ok ? 🙂

On the 13th of August, 2 years ago, after 21 hours of labour (yes, you can click here to relive my birthing experience, hee), this precious gem was born !

Happy 2nd Birthday my Beautiful Light !

Thank you Allah. 🙂

Dearest DK, Mummy loves you so so so so much & I cannot imagine life without you and your incessant chatter.
I pray that you grow up to be bright and the best in this world & the hereafter. May you be blessed with all the pretty, happy & wonderful things you deserve. Aameen.

Loadsa love, hugs & sloppy kisses from your Mummy ! :’)

Mr. Sunshine and I planned a birthday celebration for Khayla at Burger King, Extreme Park, Shah Alam on the August 25th. We invited family, some relatives friends who lived nearby.
I ordered a Barney themed birthday cake & Mr. Sunshine hired ‘Barney’ to entertain the kids.

The Barney we hired turned out to be skinny and looked pretty different (haha) from the real Barney, so Khayla wasn’t really pleased. In fact, she was terrified ! Haha.

The birthday cake from Jasmeen Home Delights

THE BIRTHDAY GIRL, WOOT WOOT !

Cake cutting session. 🙂

Told ya she was terrified of this version of Barney. Poor baby ! Hehe.
I even had to distract her with a toy to take a picture with Barney.
Us, sans Fahim who was asleep. Hehe. I look so tired !

Arina & pretty Ayra !

With my BFF Annisa and Lene.

The in-laws 🙂

The extended family ! 🙂

The friends ! 🙂

Mak & Abah who came all the way from Batu Pahat. :’)

Disclaimer: No carbonated drinks were served at the party. Hehe.

Alhamdulillah, the party went smoothly. Khayla would like to thank everyone for their presence & presents ! 🙂

Now moving on to our Raya celebrations this year, as I mentioned in my previous post, we spent Raya eve and the first two days of Syawal in Gombak this year.
Daddy bought beef rendang from Aunty Leha and I made some peanut sauce, chicken curry (as per Mr Sunshine’s request) & boiled some nasi himpit. 🙂

I had a makeup malfunction on the first day of Syawal. I realized I bought the wrong eyeliner because this one made me look like I have black eyes. Blergh. And because I didn’t bring my makeup remover, I had to deal with fugly eyes the whole day !

Selamat Hari Raya ya’ll ! 🙂

We went to arwah Mummy’s close friend, Aunty Zainah’s place in the morning. When I was small, I used to think that this was our kampung. Yes, that’s how long we’ve known Aunty Zainah ! :”)

Sunshine ! 🙂

Seth Fahim wore a baju melayu along with a sampin, super cute tau !

The future dentist and I.

The only photo we took at Aunty Leha’s place was of Khayla and her cousins, hehe.

At Aunty Maziey’s. Just like the good old days. 🙂

With Sal on the second day of Syawal before leaving for Batu Pahat. 🙂

Beraya in Batu Pahat in purple. 🙂

With the in-laws. 🙂
This was on the 5th of Syawal before going to Akey’s house. 🙂

My bestie of 15 years with her daughter Qaireen Alisha. 🙂
Last stop the day before I go back to work – Mak Andak’s. 🙂

There’s gonna be a huge change in our lives, soon InshaAllah. No, Khayla is not getting a sibling, YET. I’ll blog about it soon.  Ok ok, I’LL TRY to blog about it soon. Don’t be mad if I blog about it 6 months after it happens, haha.

I hope all of you had a splendid Raya ! 🙂
